How are carpeted stairs and landings cleaned in a Brentwood house?

We work up the staircase one step at a time, so the tread, the front edge and the corners where dust and hair collect all get hot water extraction, not just the middle where people walk. Marks on the landing and the busy bottom steps are pre treated first so the solution has time to loosen them.

Usually, yes. Mud comes out best once it has dried completely: vacuum away the loose soil first, then we pre treat what's left and lift it with hot water extraction. Muddy soil from gardens and country park walks can leave a brown shadow on pale carpet, and treating it before the main clean gives it the best chance of coming out.

Dogs also bring hair, smells and the odd accident. We pre treat those patches too, which helps freshen the fibres as well as lift the mark. A washable mat inside the back door and a towel by the lead hook after a walk through Thorndon's woods will save the hall carpet between cleans.

How long does carpet take to dry, and do I need to move the furniture?

Most carpets can be walked on within a few hours, and full drying takes up to 24 hours. A thick, deep pile takes longer than a thin one, and a damp November day longer than a breezy one in May. Opening a window, or keeping the heating on in winter, speeds it up. Keep pets off until it's dry underfoot.

Before we arrive, clear toys, shoes, cables and anything fragile off the floor. Mention the big pieces, such as beds, wardrobes and sofas, at the booking stage, and we'll work out the order of rooms around them. When furniture goes back, put foil or plastic pads under the feet until the carpet has dried right through, as wet carpet can pick up stain from wooden legs.

Should I have the carpets cleaned when I move out of a Brentwood rental?

Usually yes, if they're dirtier than at check in. The inventory clerk compares the carpets with the check in report, and a spill by the sofa or a grey track along the hall shows up clearly in an empty room. You can have the carpets done as a separate booking or on the same day as an end of tenancy clean.

Be realistic about stains. Coffee, red wine, mud and most food marks usually lift, but bleach spots and dye transfer strip or change the original colour, and no stain removal can put it back.
